COLOURFUL BOATS FOR PLEASURE RIDES ON THE HOOGHLY- KOLKATA

Like most cities Kolkata or the erstwhile Calcutta has grown around a river, here the Hoogly, the most westerly  and commercially important arm of the Ganges meanders slowly towards its delta . The city was founded in 1690 by the British East India Company on the East bank of the river , the port was an exit point for the rich trade from the hinterland of Bengal , India’s richest province then, The city is a celebration of this mighty river .
