Vidyasagar Setu, or the popular Second Hoogly Bridge, connects the city of Kolkata through Howrah or the other metropolises of the country . Named after Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar , the social reformer of the 19th century , it is India’s first and longest cable -stayed bridge and at the time it was built , the bridge was quite an engineering marvel with its 121 cables in a fan arrangement, using steel pylons. with six-lane traffic and a 1.2 metre (3 ft 11 in )-wide pedestrian crossing on each side , the bridge handles more than 85,000 vehicles in a day .
