THE METROPOLITAN BUILDING IN ESPLANADE -KOLKATA

The Metropolitan Building in Esplanade, Kolkata, is a historic building that was built in the late 19th century. It is located on the corner of Amherst Street and Chowringhee Road, and is one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in India. It was designed by the British architect C.J. Phipps in 1891 and completed in 1894. The building is known for its grandeur and grandiose effect, with its four–story facade, decorated with Corinthian columns and flanked by two towers.

The building was originally built as a shopping arcade, but it has since been used for many other purposes. It was used as a military headquarters during the British Raj, and later as a government office. During the Second World War, it was used as a barracks for British soldiers. After the war, it was used as a hotel, a movie theater, and a restaurant. In the 1950s, it was used as a police station.

Today, the building is used as a shopping mall and is home to several stores and restaurants. The building is also home to the Victoria Memorial Hall, which houses the Victoria Memorial Museum and Library.
