With the growth of shipping and advent of vessels of deeper draft, The Prince’s Dock, Princess Dock and Victoria Dock were found to be inadequate. So in 1904, the Port Trust constructed a new, larger dock with deeper berths. Alexandra Dock took ten years and cost Rs 9 crores to build. It was opened on 21 March 1914 and it proved to be a great asset during the First World War as it could accommodate the largest battleships. In 1972, the Alexandra Dock was renamed Indira Dock, after Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. It handles cargo using electric wharf cranes but will soon be reengineered by the Mumbai Port Trust to be able to handle modern ships.
