Bhuleshwar is one of Mumbai’s oldest neighbourhoods that mushroomed at the edges of the walled Fort in the 19th and 20th century. Many traders from Gujarat and Rajasthan who moved here to deal in cotton and textiles, built homes that were a visual reminder of the towns they’d left behind. So modest buildings with Corinthian, vernacular, Victorian, and haveli-style architecture are a common sight as are community dwellings called wadis, which have an ornate gated entrance and a central courtyard.

The area is also known for housing over 70 temples, including the 300-year-old Bhuleshwar temple, from which the neighbourhood gets its name and the Mumbadevi Temple, dedicated to a mother goddess Mumba after whom Mumbai is named. Its crowded lanes and market hold a bewildering array of shops selling colourful glass bangles, embroidered saris and sweetmeats.
