Bhuleshwar is one of Mumbai’s oldest neighbourhoods that mushroomed at the edges of the walled Fort in the 19^th and 20^th century. Many traders from Gujarat and Rajasthan who moved here to deal in cotton and textiles, built homes that were a visual reminder of the towns they’d left behind. So modest buildings with Corinthian, vernacular, Victorian, and haveli-style architecture are a common sight as are community dwellings called wadis, which have an ornate gated entrance and a central courtyard.

The area is also known for housing over 70 temples, including the 300-year-old Bhuleshwar temple, from which the neighbourhood gets its name and the Mumbadevi Temple, dedicated to a mother goddess Mumba after whom Mumbai is named. Its crowded lanes and market hold a bewildering array of shops selling colourful glass bangles, embroidered saris and sweetmeats.
