Parsee Gymkhana (Code: 092) – Mounted and Wooden Frame

₹3,000.00 – ₹30,000.00

In 1885, a group of Parsi enthusiasts met at the Ripon Club near Kala Ghoda to form a gymkhana that would cater to the needs of the community for outdoor sports. The Parsi Gymkhana was set up with the industrialist Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy as the first president and eventually its biggest benefactor.

The Parsi Gymkhana soon became the headquarters of cricket. A Parsi team even won a march against the Europeans of Bombay Gymkhana in 1889. The institution was already well established when Lord Harris, the Governor of Bombay allotted the Gymkhana a plot of land on Marine Drive for cricket pitches, a pavilion, and other sports activities in 1892. Among the Gymkhana’s star members were cricketing legends like Pestonji Kanga, Russy Mody, Polly Umrigar, Nari Contractor, Farokh Engineer and Russy Surti.

Today the gymkhana has an all-Parsi badminton team and an all-Parsi snooker team but unfortunately no all-Parsi cricket team.
