Between St Xavier’s College and Metro Cinema is a Grade-III heritage structure known as Jer Mahal. A cluster of seven buildings, it is one of the finest examples of the vernacular style prevalent in the 19th century. Conservation architects hail as “Bombay’s most beautiful chawl”.

A pair of arches that open up on JSS Road and Kalbadevi Road are a throwback to the era of the locality’s heydays, when horse carriages would pass through those arches and the passage was much wider.

Perched on the upper floors are a handful of Goan “kudds” (clubs). These cheap boarding houses were set up a century ago (the oldest one can be traced back to 1857) by Goan residents for young men who came from  Goan villages to Mumbai in search of jobs. Each kudd has a statue or a picture of the village patron saint
