Elphinstone High School was established in 1822 in Bombay, in honour of Mountstuart Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay (1819–1827). Funded by the David Sassoon family, the school was designed by architect George Twigge Molecey in 1872. Architecturally, the Indo Gothic structure was constructed from Kurla stone on a robust and massive scale; with much ornamentation, sculptural detail and polychrome work. The presence of large trees prevents the photographer from capturing the true scale of the building. This photo manages to capture the large and exceptionally broad staircase at the entrance of the school. It is now known as the Elphinstone Technical High School.
