Colaba gets its name from ‘Kolabhat’, a word in the Koli language. Kolis were the indigenous inhabitants of the islands. During Portuguese rule in the 16th century, the island was known as ‘Candil’. After the British took over the island in the late 17th century, it came to be known as ‘Colio’.

As boat traffic to Colaba increased, the need for a causeway became evident. Land was reclaimed and the Colaba Causeway was constructed in 1838. The Bombay City Improvement Trust further reclaimed 75,000 square metres on the western shore. In 1906, a seafront road with a promenade called ‘Cuffe Parade’ was completed.
