The stadium was established in 1984 , when it was felt the club ground in the Maidan area,(ATK Mohun Bagan , East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting ) and even Eden Garden in the vicinity proved too small for the huge crowd on the match days .And it is now the official home ground for these popular football clubs of the city ,hosting inter club matches apart from other major international sporting events.
